Romelu Lukaku reveals poverty childhood experience

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku is now one of the richest football stars in the world thanks to what he earns weekly at Old Trafford and what he has gotten at his former clubs.

But Lukaku never knew he would make it to the top of his football career considering how rough and difficult his childhood was in Belgium.

His family hit the skids after professional footballer and dad Roger was forced to retire, while mother Adolphine had to take a series of cleaning jobs despite being seriously ill.

Lukaku on the other hand was roaming around the streets of Antwerp looking for means of survival to help his then struggling family.

"When my father stopped playing we landed in a hole financially. People left us to fend for ourselves, and I have always kept that in my mind.

"Everything changed for us inside two months. I remember everything - I was five or six, had just begun playing football, and then my dad retired.

"We didn't have a TV or even electricity at home. We were then evicted from our flat, and we moved to Antwerp.

"In the beginning we didn't even have curtains on the windows. We slept on the floor, with my mum, brother Jordan and me upstairs and my dad on the ground floor.

"My mother became diabetic, and her health was not good. I went to live with my aunt for a while until my mum returned home.

"My mother is the boss. I make decisions about my football career without asking her, but she is my source of inspiration for everything else,'' Lukaku explained according to UK Sun.

From a player whose parent could not afford to pay for electricity when he was young, Romelu Lukaku's story has now changed for good as he now lives a life of luxury earning thousands of pounds a week, living in big mansion and driving expensive cars.

Born on May 13, 1993, Lukaaku started his career with local side Rupel Boom before joining Lierse, where he earned a move to Anderlecht of the Belgian Pro League in 2006. Lukaku made his professional debut while still at school at age 16 and became the 2009–10 top scorer in Belgium as Anderlecht won the Belgian championship.

He played for Chelsea, West Brom and Everton before completing a move to Manchester United where he currently plays.
