Meat pie making
The cooking process is divided into three main stages:
- Making the dough for the pie
- Making the filling
- Baking and decorating the snack
How to prepare dough
Step 1. You need a big bowl. Add the 8 cups of flour into it.
Step 2. Mix a bit of salt (1-2 pinches) and the baking powder with the flour.
Step 3. You should cut the butter (or margarine) into pieces and add all the pieces into the flour.
Step 4. Rub the flour with butter using your fingers. It is often better to use margarine instead because this way you can make the flour crumble-like.
Step 5. Form the dough by adding cold water carefully. It’s enough to add 0.5 cups to make a great quality dough that is stiff and perfect for the meat pie.
Step 6. Let the dough set for about 6 minutes.

How to make the filling
Step 1. When you begin to make the dough, you can also start working on the filling. Firstly, peel and scrape your vegetables. Then wash them. It is better to cut both potatoes and carrots into small cubes.
Step 2. Onion needs to be washed as well. Then you can also slice it into small pieces.
Step 3. Take a pot and add oil. Place on the stove. You can heat it at the medium fire and fry onion pieces, add the minced meat and stir everything together.
Step 4. When you see that meat looks pale you can pour a cup of water. Also, add thyme and seasoning cubes. You can wait for these ingredients to heat under the cover.
Step 5. Once the ingredients on fire begin to bubble, you can mix in the sliced potatoes and carrots from Step 1. Let everything cook for a while. All the vegetables should look well-done.
Step 6. Take 0.5 cups of water and add 2 tablespoons of flour. Make sure the water is cold. Add this mixture to the ingredients you are cooking. This will help the pie to be moist.
Step 7. The filling is almost ready. Finish it by adding a bit of salt. It is all up to your personal taste.
How to bake meat pie
Step 1. The Nigerian meat pie making process continues when you have the dough and filling ready for it. Since we are using the Nigerian stove, you also need one to make the popular snack.
Step 2. It is better to prepare the aluminium pot you will use for baking beforehand. It is important to add clean sand to the bottom of it. While it is pre-heating you can form the pies.
Step 3. You need to roll out the dough. It should be 0.5 centimeters thick.
Step 4. Cut out the round pieces from the dough using the cutter. All the leftovers should be set aside.
Step 5. Add the filling to the pieces of dough you have cut out. You will have to close each piece and it should look filled-just-enough to look delicious and yummy.
Step 6. Take a plate or bowl and break the egg. You should use it while closing the dough pieces. Just add it to the edge to seal the meat pie perfectly. The edges can be sealed with a fork.
Step 7. Put each portion of dough on a flat surface. You will have to place each one into the egg so that the outside is covered with a thin layer.
Step 8. Place the pies in the baking pan and inside the preheated big aluminium pot with sand. The process will take about half an hour. Sometimes these Nigerian snacks take 40-50 minutes to bake.
Step 9. It is better to keep an eye on the meat pie and flip the pieces every 5-7 minutes to avoid burning them.
Take out the meat pies cooked with a stove and enjoy this incredible meal. Enjoy the wonderful taste and have a happy family dinner together.
