Governor Obaseki gives N500,000 to victim of suspected herdsmen attack

- The Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, has given N500,000 to a victim of suspected herdsmen attack in the state

- Obaseki made the donation through his chief of staff, Taiwo Akerele

- The money, the governor said would be used by the victim to clear his medical bills

The Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, has paid the medical bills of a victim of suspected herdsmen in Ojah community in Akoko Edo local government area of the state.

The governor released the sum of N500,000 through his chief staff, Taiwo Akerele, at the Government House in Benin city.

Obaseki said the money released to the victim would help provide him with relief materials.

He also assured that measures have been put in place to end the clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.

One of the members of the Okogie of Ojah, who represented the community alongside the traditional head of Okurogho, Oba Daniel Suru Lawani, Phillip Eguarogie, said the attack was just one of a series of attacks against the community.

Philip also explained to journalists that Obayemi narrowly escaped death on January 4 when a group of suspected herdsmen attacked him on his way to his farm.

Philip said: "On January 4, there was a Fulani herdsmen attack in Ojah community. A young man was going to the farm and saw a group of herdsmen coming towards him.

“He greeted them and they requested for food items and money from him. He told them in the Hausa language that he was going to the farm and did not have food, nor money on him.

“Immediately he left them, he felt an impulse to look back. He saw that they had brought out a cutlass to behead him. But he used his right hand to shield himself as a form of defence and screamed. That caused him that hand. He was rushed to Poly Clinic in Ososo by farmers who heard his call for help."

Philip also said the governor’s intervention would go a long way in easing the financial burden of the victim.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) reacted to the alleged attack on Governor Obaseki of Edo state.

The police denied that it declared the managing director of Obu Cement Company, a subsidiary of BUA Group, Yusuf Binji, wanted over an alleged attack on the convoy of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state.

Jimoh Moshood, the public relations officer of the Nigeria police, confirmed that Binji was not wanted over the alleged attack as stated by the Edo government, through Obaseki’s spokesperson, Crusoe Osagie.
