We will ask FG to declare state of emergency on farmers/herdsmen crisis - Lawmakers

- The House of Representatives has condemned the killings across Nigeria by suspected herdsmen

- The lawmakers said they will ask the federal government to declare a state of emergency on the crisis between farmers and herdsmen across Nigeria

- The House decried the incessant rise in the attacks by suspected herdsmen in various states across Nigeria

The House of Representatives has promised to urge the federal government to declare a state of emergency on the crisis between farmers and herdsmen across Nigeria.

The House said it will make the request once it resumes plenary on Tuesday, January 16.

Speaking on Channels Television's Sunrise daily, the spokesperson for the Lower House, Abdulrazak Namdas, said the issue of insecurity will top the agenda at the plenary.

Namdas said the crisis between the herdsmen and the farmers does not seem to the reducing but rather escalating as the day goes by.

He said: "Top on our paper is, we are going to discus the issue of security in the country. We are going to discuss the issue of herdsmen and farmers conflict and we are going to the government to at least declare a state of emergency on the farmers/herdsmen conflict across Nigeria.

"There is hardly any part of this country that hasn't witnessed any form of attack or the other by the herdsmen.

"We in the House of Representatives, we had 14 motions in the past, from 2015 to this moment, we have raised very sensitive issues .

"In 2015, when we were sworn in, by October 15, there was a motion to address the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers.

"Some of these things have be coming up and I think it is escalating.

"Today, we have heard that the herdsmen is ranked number four on the list of terrorist group across the world with Boko Haram as number two."

Decrying that having these two groups in Nigerian is a terrible thing, Namdas said, the legislature will have to work with the executive to ensure that much is done to improve the security situation in Nigeria.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the peace meeting between governors and stakeholders from Nasarawa and Benue states ended in a deadlock.

The peace meeting was organised by the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, on Monday, January 15.

The meeting which was expected to address the disputes between the two states was postponed as the governors from the two states were not present.
