Manchester United risk losing Spanish playmaker Juan Mata for free this summer as they are stalling on triggering his contract extension.

Juan Mata signed from Chelsea to Manchester United four years ago and he signed a four and half year deal which will expire this summer.

United hold an option to extend the contract by another season, but as of now, the 29-year-old has not been informed.

The delay means Mata has been free to negotiate terms with clubs outside England since January 1. However, despite interest from Inter Milan and Valencia, Mata is poised to stay at Old Trafford.

United are expected to trigger the contract extension just like they have done with Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera this season.

United also have Ashley Young and Daley Blind on contract extension clauses while Fellaini is ready to leave this summer.

Mata played 83 minutes in United 3-0 victory over Stoke City on Monday, January 16, and has scored three goals in 24 games this season.

He has started nine of the last 11 games in all competitions for Man United.
