President Buhari says 2019 elections must be peaceful

- President Muhammadu Buhari has urged politicians and political parties to pledge their commitment to a peaceful elections in 2019

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, January 18, called on politicians and political parties to pledge their commitment to the peaceful democratic process of the country ahead of the 2019 general elections, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathered that the president made the call in his keynote speech as special guest of honour at the 15th Daily Trust Dialogue with the theme "Nigeria and the Challenges of 2019" which took place in Abuja.

President Buhari who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha, asked politicians and political parties to urge their supporters to respect the electoral process and refrain from violence.

He also stated that all aggrieved parties should seek redress through constitutional means and respect the rule of law.

"There is the need for all of us to sustain efforts at building confidence in the country's democratic institutions, notably the judiciary and the INEC.

"In that context, on election-related disputes, it is my opinion that a timely adjudication and resolution of legal complaints arising from elections is a key component of our democratic process. Working together, we can ensure that we make formidable progress along this line," the president added.

Buhari assured Nigerians that his administration would not condone any action nor support any individual or group "that undermines citizens' confidence in the ability of the country's political institutions to conduct peaceful and successful elections."

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari has given clues that he will seek re-election in 2019.

The issue of whether Buhari will run for the 2019 presidency had been a subject of debate in the public, with political analysts insisting that his body language is in the affirmative, especially now that the president’s support groups are drumming support for him.

The president on Tuesday, November 28, in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire for the 5th European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Summit, gave a hint that suggests he would likely run for another term.
