George Weah warms up to be sworn in as Liberia's president

Former football star, George Weah, will be inaugurated as Liberia's new president on Monday, January 22. The 51-year-old president-elect got a decisive victory in the recent presidential election. He is to take over from Africa's first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Eye Witness News reports.

In a tweet to his more than 60,000 followers on Sunday, January 21, Weah noted: "In the future months, together, we will need to work harder than ever for Liberia to grow stronger".

His campaign revolved around details of reviving the economy, but he faces very high expectations from his young supporters who are looking to him for the alleviation of poverty and the provision of employment across the country.

Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma will not attend the ceremony in Monrovia. The presidency announced that Jacob Zuma will be represented by Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane.

Legit.ng reported that incoming Liberian President George Weah returned to the football pitch to lead the Liberian All stars team against team Liberian armed forces just two days before his inauguration as Liberian president.

Weah was voted Liberian president recently in his third attempt to become the number one political figure in Liberia.

Weah till date is the only African footballer to have won the prestigious Ballon d'Or while playing for AC Milan.
