We have forgiven you - Abducted reverend sisters tell their captors

- The six Catholic reverend sisters who were kidnapped in Edo have stated that they have forgiven their abductors

- At their thanksgiving mass, the sisters disclosed that even in their captivity, they kept praying for the conversion of their captors

- The Edo state governor also expressed hope that his state would be safer, going forward

After regaining their freedom following 53 days in captivity, the six Catholic sisters from the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Convent in Edo state have told their captors that they have been forgiven, Punch reports.

The development was made public at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Benin, the state capital, where the sisters spoke during their thanksgiving mass.

Legit.ng gathers that speaking on behalf of her fellow nuns, one of the victims, Isiocha, said the experience had increased their faith in God, even though it was traumatic.

She stated: “For everything that may have happened, we continue to thank the good Lord for what he has done for us and what he will continue to do in our lives.

“It was not a good experience, but in everything, we thank God. It has increased our faith and trust in God. With this experience, we can now help others to trust in God more.

“We have forgiven them. Even as we were there (in captivity), we kept praying for them, for their conversion.

“Many thoughts came, but we strongly believed that God was in control. They (kidnappers) were conversing with our people, but we did not know what was going on."

Also speaking at the celebratory mass, Sister Agatha Osarekhoe, the superior-general of the convent, thanked God that the sisters had been released.

She also commended the leaders of the church, security agencies and the state government for their support.

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state who was represented by his deputy, Philip Shuaibu, stated: “We thank God that we have a Commissioner of Police that is concerned. With what we are working on, I can tell you that Edo State will be safer than it is now."

The sisters were kidnapped by gunmen who stormed their convent on November 13, 2017.

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that the three Catholic reverend sisters and three other females, who were kidnapped by gunmen in Edo state, were finally released.

The sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Convent regained their freedom after spending 53 days in the kidnappers’ den.

One of the victims, Veronica Ajayi, was released at about 6pm on Saturday, January 6 while the other five were released before 12am on Sunday, January 7.
