Anambra declares Thursday work free day to mourn Alex Ekwueme

- Thursday, February 1, has been declared as work free day by the Anambra state government

-In a statement, the government said the work free day would enable residents participate fully in the activities planned for the second republic vice president, late Alex Ekwueme

- All markets and businesses in the state would be closed on that day

The Anambra state government has declared Thursday, February 1, as work free day for all civil servants in the state.

The state government said the free day would enable all Anambra residents to honour the second republic vice president, late Alex Ekwueme.

The secretary to the state government, Solo Chukwudebelu, in a statement said the work free day will also enable the people participate effectively in the funeral rites and programmes planned for the late icon.

Chukwudebelu who said the event would take place at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, also noted that all markets and businesses in the state would be closed on that day.

He said those expected to attend the commendation ceremony include various social, cultural, religious, political, professional, educational, market men and women and other groups, adding that the ceremony would commence at 10am that day.

Also, renovations have already begun at the Ekwueme Square in preparation for the ceremony as canopies and stands were being mounted at various points.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has received the remains of the late former Nigeria's vice president, Alex Ekwueme.

The Senate president Bukola Saraki, his counterpart at the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were also among other dignitaries who paid last respect to the late elder statesman.

It was gathered that the duo were at the parade of honour for Ekwueme, as part of activities marking state funeral of the late statesman at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
