Buhari will fulfil all campaign promises - APC to UK government

- A UK government delegation paid a visit to the national leadership of the APC in Abuja

- The party's national chairman Chief Odigie-Oyegun assured them President Buhari will fulfil his campaign promises

- The meeting was centred on the coming 2019 general elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured the United Kingdom that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government is committed to delivering on its 2015 campaign promises to Nigerians.

A statement by the party’s media office said the national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, gave the assurance when receiving a delegation of the UK in Abuja on Tuesday, January 30.

Odigie-Oyegun highlighted the achievements recorded by the Buhari-led administration in the areas of economic diversification, infrastructure, anti-corruption and security, particularly in the northeast.

He commended the UK government for its continued cooperation and support for the administration and Nigerians.

The chairman said that the meeting focused on the forthcoming 2019 general election and United Kingdom’s engagements in Nigeria.

The United Kingdom government delegation was led by the head of West Africa department at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London, Rob Dixon.

Other members of the delegation were the deputy head of political section, British High Commission, Stuart Gardner and senior political adviser, British High Commission, Osaro Odemwingie.

They were received by Odigie-Oyegun accompanied by the deputy national chairman (South), Engr. Segun Oni; deputy national secretary, Hon. Victor Giadom and chief of staff to the APC national chairman, Edwin Ikhinmwin.

"During the meeting, the APC national chairman expressed the commitment of the President Muhammadu-led APC administration to deliver on 2015 election promises to Nigerians. He also highlighted achievements recorded by the administration in the area of economic diversification, infrastructure, anti-corruption and security, particularly in the Country’s North East. Odigie-Oyegun thanked the UK government for its continued cooperation and support for the administration," a statement by the party read.

Speaking to journalists after the close-door meeting, the leader of the UK delegation Rob Dixon said the meeting dwelt on the forthcoming 2019 general election and the UK’s engagements in Nigeria.

“We talked about the extent of the UK’s engagements in Nigeria and also asked the APC National Chairman on his perspectives on political developments in Nigeria. We talked about the breadth of the UK’s relationship whether it is what we are doing to help Nigeria fight Boko Haram in the Northeast and supporting economic development across the country. We also talked about shared interests for a smooth and peaceful elections and what the prospects for the campaign might be in the course of the next 12 months," Dixon told journalists.

Meanwhile, days after Chief Olusegun Obasanjo wrote a letter advising President Buhari against seeking re-election in 2019, reports have indicated that the latter has issued a warning to his aides against attacking the Ota farmer.

Premium Times reports a source in the presidential villa as saying President Buhari issued the warning to his spokespersons immediately after Obasanjo released the letter.
