Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, January 30, intervened in the Kano All Progressives Congress crisis that involved governor Abdullahi Ganduje and his predecessor Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso as the lawmakers had a hot debate.

Punch reports that the Senate president Bukola Saraki, ordered the Senate committee on police affairs to summon the inspector-general of police, Ibrahim Idris, and make sure that he provides security for Kwankwaso to be able to visit his constituency.

The issue was raised at plenary when Senator Isah Misau (Bauchi-Central) raised a point of order on the spate of insecurity in Kano due to the political crisis in the state.

The senator Misau said he was concerned by the crisis due to the fact that 70 per cent of his constituency shares border with the state.

According to him, ''I don’t want to talk about the issue of politics in Kano but I want to talk about the issue of security, especially concerning what is happening in some days in Kano. If you look at the social media from two days ago, there is the issue of ‘thuggery’ like what we call ‘Endeba’ in those days in Kano. And it is going to be a very serious concern if we don’t do anything about the coming back of ‘Endeba.

''This issue started from the time when one of our colleagues, Senator Musa Rabi’u Kwankwaso was about to visit Kano. He gave a date for the visit and to meet his people in his constituency but instead of him to be allowed and given the necessary security, the police wrote a letter to him, advising him not to go.”

In his reaction, Senator Kabiru Gaya (Kano-South), dismissed Misau’s claim of security tension in Kano as false. He stated that the political issues in Kano should not be raised on the floor of the Senate.

Gaya said: ''On the issue of the two governors Kwankwaso and Ganduje, they are very good friends; they were governor and deputy governor for four years. And the party (APC) and the governor are working to see how we can reconcile the issue. Therefore, this matter is like a family matter. We are working to resolve it and it is not a matter that we can bring up here.”

Also a member from Kano, Senator Barau Jibrin, who seemed not have been happy by Misau’s comments called on Saraki to prevent members from raising issues from their local politics on the floor of the Senate. He pointed out that if not checked, such issues could divide the lawmakers.

Jibrin said: ''I am deeply worried; I am worried in the sense that I know the efforts you put to unite us here as a family under your leadership, and the two work together as brothers. But a trend is now emerging that creates problems among us. I know that as the leader, you will find a way to stop this trend.

''It is a family squabble that is happening in Kano, yet someone like Isah Misau is bringing it on the floor to create problems. We are politicians and there are bound to be disagreements; there are bound to be squabbles. Bringing minor squabbles that occurred in the states to the highest assembly in this country; to discuss backyard squabbles in the states at the Senate is a dangerous trend.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Senator Misau was slammed by his colleague Senator Jibrin Barau, chairman senate committee on petroleum downstream represents Kano North senatorial district of Kano state.

Misau had explained that Kano politics was taking a very dangerous dimension, noting that youths who enjoyed politicians’ patronage now brandish dangerous weapons.
