Senate calls for border patrol over invasion of Cross River by Cameroonian Gendarmes

The Senate has called on the Nigerian military authorities to increase military presence and intensify border patrol within the Nigeria-Cameroon border to prevent Cameroonians from crossing into the country to harass people.

The lawmakers who made the call during plenary on Wednesday, February 7, condemned the harassment of Nigerian citizens by Cameroonian soldiers in Cross River state.

The upper chamber made the call when deliberating on the influx of refugees from the Republic of Cameroon to some border communities in Cross River state and it’s attendant security fallout.

The House resolved to call on the minister of foreign affairs to urgently liaise with his Cameroonian counterpart to secure the release of innocent Nigerians arrested by the Cameroonian authorities.

It also called on Nigeria and Cameroon to strengthen the capacity of Nigeria-Cameroon trans-border security committee aimed at addressing emerging trans-border security issues confronting the two countries.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives on Wednesday, February 7, ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to apologise to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state while it ordered the removal of Moshood Jimoh, the force public relations officer.

The House of Representatives gave this order in reaction to how Jimoh described Governor Ortom as a drowning man during a programme on Channels Television on Tuesday, February 6.

The Punch reports that the House was debating a motion on the attacks by alleged herdsmen in Benue state, when the lawmakers asked Ibrahim Idris to apologise to Ortom.
