Chinese government offers scholarship to 47 ABU first class students

- Chinese government said it is impressed with the interest shown by ABU in partnering with Chinese universities

- The government, thus, decided to award scholarship to 47 students of the university

- The vice chancellor of ABU said the said the recipients were students with first class grade, saying that the award was a credit to their efforts

Chinese Ambassador in Nigeria, Dr Zhou Pingjian, on Thursday, February 8, said that his country has decided to award a scholarship to 47 students of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, who graduated with first class.

Pingjian said the scholarship was tagged ‘October 1 Scholarship for China-Nigeria Friendship’ as both countries got their independence on October 1, Daily Trust reports.

He said: “China is the largest economy in Asia and Nigeria is the largest in Africa. On October 1, 1960, Nigeria got her independence, while the People’s Republic of China got hers on October 1, 1949. The volume of trade between the two countries had remarkably increased, where import from Nigeria to China increased to 79.1%, while the volume of import from China to Nigeria also increased tremendously.”

Legit.ng gathered that Pingjian said that China is impressed with the interest shown by ABU in partnering with Chinese universities.

“Everybody knows ABU is the most prestigious in Nigeria and of course on this continent. We are happy ABU has shown degree of interest in partnering with Chinese universities,” he added.

In his speech, the vice chancellor of ABU, Professor Ibrahim Garba, said the recipients were students with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.68 and above, saying that the award was a credit to their efforts and a morale booster for the next few years before they graduate.

Legit.ng previously reported that The Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji Arakeji, Osun state has announced that it had offered partial scholarships to all students of the institution.

The Punch reports that those in religious studies are the most favoured in the new scholarship which is in the form of reduction of tuition fees.

Professor Sola Fajana who is the vice chancellor of the institution revealed this new development.

He said the move was made to make education in the school more attractive, especially religious studies.
