- Jose Mourinho is reportedly preparing to off load two of his defenders in the summer
- The two defenders - Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have not been impressive for Manchester United this season
- Mourinho has his eyes on Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Leicester City’s Harry Maguire
Jose Mourinho is reportedly planning to shake up Manchester United’s defence with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in the firing line, The Mirror reports.
The Portuguese manager reportedly has doubts about the abilities of the defensive pair following the 1-0 loss to Newcastle at the weekend.
Mourinho is wary about Manchester City’s huge spending on defenders in last summer’s transfer window as United’s present predicament requires a wake up call.
City spent a whopping £57million on getting Aymeric Laporte in from Athletic Bilbao while Liverpool splashed out a record £75million on centre-back Virgil van Djik from Southampton.
Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane has been admirer of Mourinho while Leicester defender Harry Maguire is said to be on United's summer transfer wishlist.
Smalling dived and conceded the free kick that led to Matt Richie’s winner while Jones scored an own goal in the 2-0 loss to Tottenham at Wembley.
Both have Jones and Smalling have contracts at Old Trafford until the 2019 summer but one will likely have to make way for Eric Bailly when he returns from injury.
Mourinho is reportedly ready to keep faith with £35million Victor Lineloff despite a shaky start to life in the Premier League and Marcos Rojo is set to sign a new deal at the club.
United are mathematically out of the Premier League title race as they trail their noisy neighbours City with 16 points and the title decider could be when both teams clash at the Etihad by April.
