- An ex Anambra state governor, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has added his voice to the ongoing restructuring debate
- According to the former governor, corruption is the nation's major problem and not restructuring; even though he called for Nigeria to be restructured along regional lines
- He called on those desiring to build a new Nigeria to take an oath to serve the people, and not get involved in self-enrichment
Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, a former governor of Anambra state, has stated that the nation’s major problem is not restructuring, but corruption, Vanguard reports.
Ezeife made his comments in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, on Monday, February 12, at the anniversary lecture to mark Governor Seriake Dickson's six years in office.
NAIJ.com gathers that while speaking on the topic, Restructuring: The way forward for a New Nigeria, the former governor however reiterated the urgent need to restructure the country along regional lines.
He further stated that the call for the establishment of state police should be done with caution or it may give undue power to governors.
The former governor stated: “Our heroes past gave us a model; they gave a structure which worked. I testified and it has been confirmed by many people. When we talk of restructuring we mean, going back to the agreed Nigeria of 1954.
“Yes, there are so many elements, the APC came up with some ideas, I can see some meaningful development there, I have see the state police which is good and we may go beyond state police and have regional police.
“A state police controlled by the regional government which involves everybody in the zone will reduce too much power from the governors, but those who want to be governors are talking about state police as if it were a panacea. It will work but it has to be adjusted.
“What caused our problem is the messed up structure. In fact it is the major fact of what caused our problem. But what caused our problem is corruption. The root cause of our problem is corruption and unless we clear ourselves from it, that will be no change.
“How did APC get formed? Some corrupt men came from one party and built another party. Today in APC, corruption is in charge; PDP, corruption is in charge. I am saying we must fight corruption.
“I am involved in a small group trying to make out something for Nigeria and we decided that anybody who wants to be involved in the new system to bring about a new Nigeria must take an oath before any election; and the oath you are swearing is to serve the people and not to engage in corrupt self enrichment.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife stated that ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo gave the best advice to President Muhammadu Buhari in his now-famous open letter.
The ex-governor stated that anyone who likes Buhari won’t advice him to re-contest for the presidency in 2019.
