- The federal government has been accused of trying to cover the case involving the executive secretary of NHIS
- Solomon Agbo, a youth leader questioned the reinstatement of Usman Yusuf who was recently reinstated by the federal goverment
- He insisted that the NHIS boss failed to follow basic procurement procedures
Solomon Agbo, coordinator, United Youths Alliance Against Corruption, on Thursday, February 15, accused the Federal Government of attempting to ‘sweep under the carpet’, the allegations against Usman Yusuf, reinstated executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Agbo said this while addressing the issue on Channels Television.
The youth leader who questioned the reinstatement said the “NHIS has failed”, under the leadership of Yusuf.
Yusuf who was suspended by the minister of health, Professor Isaac Adewole, in June 2017, for alleged gross misconduct was reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari.
After his reinstatement, and after Nigerians came out to critisise his reinstatement, the Federal Government, says it believes that the recall will not stop any ongoing investigations into the allegations levelled against him.
Going further, Agbo, told the news outlet that apart from the case of the current NHIS boss, there had been continuous cases of previous NHIS DGs subverting the Rule of Law which have never been brought to light until now.
“Talking about the tenure of professor Yusuf, we also had an interest in his predecessor because it has been a continuous process. Even before him, the case has been on with the predecessor.”
“Immediately Yusuf was appointed, he brought in some people (mostly family members) on secondment and placed them in strategic locations.
“The agency became a business venture. He spent above his approval limit. He handled the agency as if it was a private business,” he added.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, Yusuf Ali and Ifedayo Adedipe, have criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for reinstating the hitherto suspended executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf.
Recall that the president recalled Yusuf, although a panel, set up by the minister of health, Professor Isaac Adewole, suspended the NHIS boss on July 6, 2017.
Yusuf, who is being probed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC), was accused of perpetrating fraud to the tune of N919m.
