Alleged Nigeria Customs officials' stray bullets kill man in front of father’s shop

- Some Nigeria Customs officials have allegedly killed a man identified as Amiru Abdulaziz in an open gunfire in Katsina state

- Abdulaziz was reportedly shot dead in front of his father's shop

- The public relations officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kaduna/Katsina command, Theophilus Duniya, said he is yet to receive any official report on the incident

Tension was triggered in Daddara village, in the Jibia local government area of Katsina state after some officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), federal operations unit, allegedly shot dead a man in front of his father’s shop. The victim was identified as Amiru Abdulaziz.

The Punch reported that the customs officials had intercepted some men who packed bags of suspected smuggled rice in a vehicle.

After seizing the rice and the vehicle, officials allegedly opened gunfire to suppress any possible retaliation from the smugglers. Abdulaziz was reportedly hit by a stray bullet in the process.

Abdulaziz died on the way to a hospital. He was buried on Wednesday, February 22, according to Islamic rites.

Gambo Isah, the police spokesman for Katsina state, who confirmed the incident, said the police were making efforts to discover Abdulaziz's actual killer.

Theophilus Duniya, the public relations officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kaduna/Katsina command said he has not received any official report on the development. He further told newsmen: “I will brief you as soon as a comprehensive report is made.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Nigerian Customs Service had announced some major breakthroughs in its operations carried out by its men in the Idiroko area of Ogun state with a series of seizures including cars, rice, vegetable oil and other smuggled items.

Among items seized by the command are 13 second-hand vehicles, 12 means of conveyance, 21 motorcycles, 1,168 bags of foreign rice (50 kg each), 221 kegs of vegetable oil (25liters each), five sacks of secondhand shoes and two sacks of secondhand bags with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N153,858,579,153.00.
