A bricklayer who was on the run after he was accused of killing his wife has been arrested in Lagos state. The man identified as Akinyemi Edgar Koja allegedly strangled his wife to death in their apartment in Agemowo area of Badagry.

It was gathered that the man dumped the corpse of his 28-year-old wife identified as Ajoke inside a well after he strangled her.

According to Vanguard, the man was arrested at an undisclosed area around Lagos Island. It was gathered that he had taken refuge there since December, after he committed the crime.

Police sources who discovered Koja’s hiding place gave the police the information after the Lagos state police command declared him wanted. He was traced to the hideout with clues from phone calls he made.

During interrogation, Koja confessed that he committed the act out of jealousy. He claimed his wife had been cheating on him with different men.

He said: “I strangled her at night while she was sleeping. She was sleeping around with other men because she felt I am a poor man and she did not hide it. That fateful night, I suffocated her with pillows. When I discovered she was dead, I dumped the body inside a well close to our apartment. I ran away to make it look like I was not around when the incident happened.“

The bricklayer was charged before the magistrate court in Ebute Meta for the murder of his wife. He has been remanded in prison custody with the case adjourned to Wednesday, March 28.
