I would have personally stopped Florida school shooter - Donald Trump boasts

- President Trump condemned the inability of an armed sheriff’s deputy to stop the recent shooting at a school in Florida

- He referred to the deputy’s action as disgusting

- He said he would have personally stopped the shooting if he were present at the scene

President Donald Trump said that he would have personally run into the building and stopped the Florida school shooter if he had been at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where about 17 people were killed earlier this month.

Fortune quotes President Trump as saying: “You don’t know until you test it, but I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon.

“And I think most of the people in this room would have done that, too.”

Legit.ng gathered that Trump’s comments were an indirect criticism of the armed sheriff’s deputy who was reportedly present at the scene but failed to confront the shooter.

The president also allegedly referred to the deputy’s actions as “disgusting,” and said they "weren’t exactly medal of honor winners”.

President Trump’s comments come at a time when gun reform is once again being heavily debated across the United States, and many businesses are reportedly breaking their relationship with the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The president also told the governor’s group that he had lunch with leaders of the NRA last week and that they shouldn’t worry because, “They’re on our side,” presumably referring to the Republican Party.

Legit.ng previously reported that Trump endorsed arming teachers to protect pupils and students from school shootings.

He said arming the teachers could also prevent school shootings in the US.

He said a school staff member with a gun could end an attack "very quickly". Weighing the possibility of accepting the proposal which was floated by the National Rifle Association of America (NRA), the US president also called for an improved check on the background of people buying guns in the country.

During a plea session participated by students, teachers and families in the executive mansion's state dining room, Trump said: "It's not going to be talk like it's been in the past. If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms ... they could very well end the attack very quickly."
