Nigerian fisherman killed by Cameroonian soldier in Cross River community

A Cameroonian soldier has allegedly killed a Nigerian fisherman from the border community of Mfum in Cross River state, Punch reports.

According to a certain Alan Bassey who identified himself as a resident of Mfum, the unfortunate incident took place at a river along the border, on Monday, February 26.

Legit.ng gathers that two other fishermen were also injured in the incident.

Bassey stated: “It is the aftermath of the continuous onslaught against Cameroon separatists.”

Bassey further disclosed that Nigerians were usually targeted across the river as Cameroonian soldiers engaged in continuous shooting.

Residents of the area raised grave concerns over the actions of the Cameroonians which they said could lead to problems between both countries. They urged the Nigerian federal government to take necessary actions and also called on the security agencies to protect lives and properties of people in the country.

Ntui Etta, clan head of Ajassor, the host community of the Mfum border point, also expressed worry of the incident. According to him, Nigeria’s territorial sovereignty was being disregarded by the Cameroonian soldiers who were getting bolder.

The incident was reportedly confirmed by the state police public relations officer, Irene Ugbo.

However, the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian army could not be reached for comments.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Senate called on the Nigerian military authorities to increase military presence and intensify border patrol within the Nigeria-Cameroon border to prevent Cameroonians from crossing into the country to harass people.

The lawmakers, who made the call during plenary, condemned the harassment of Nigerian citizens by Cameroonian soldiers in Cross River state.

The upper chamber made the call when deliberating on the influx of refugees from the Republic of Cameroon to some border communities in Cross River state and its attendant security fallout.
