Nigerian student brings honour home as she wins prestigious award in UK

- A Nigerian student of the Imperial College in London has brought honour to the country by winning the Dudley Newitt Prize for Experimental Excellence

- Christiana Udoh, a student of chemical engineering, is the first Nigerian to be awarded the prize

- She also received a scholarship from the institution and her state government

A Nigerian student, Christiana Udoh, has been awarded the Dudley Newitt Prize for Experimental Excellence at the Imperial College in London, United Kingdom.

The award was announced on Monday, February 26, during the Dudley Newitt Lecture held on the university campus, Punch reports.

Legit.ng gathered that Udo, who was also offered a scholarship by the institution, was the first Nigerian to receive the award.

According to the management of the institution, she was also offered scholarship for her impressive performance during Advanced Masters studies in chemical engineering.

The Akwa Ibom state government was impressed with the awardee and offered her another scholarship to the tune of of $20,000. During his presentation of the award, the governor of Akwa Ibom state, Emmanuel Udom, commended the awardee for making the state proud through hard work and commitment to her studies, while thanking her father, Dr Esio Udoh, for his investment in her education.

Reacting to his daughter's feat, the awardee’s father said: “Christiana has retained her number one position and we feel thrilled about it. This shows that Nigeria is on course to favourably compete with any nation of the world.”

He called on the federal government to take a cue from the educational system of Isreal by training brilliant students exclusively to lead the country to technological advancement.

Udo added: “The performance of our students is hampered by government’s failure to meaningfully invest in education. Illiteracy is the greatest enemy of mankind. If you eradicate illiteracy, then hunger, diseases and social vices will be drastically reduced and our society will be a better place."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a Nigerian lady made her country proud as she was highly honoured at a University in the United Kingdom.

The lady who was identified as Cordelia Ihekerenma Oti bagged student of the year award 2017, Chattered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), University of Northampton, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom (UK).

It was learnt that the award was the first of its kind to be given by institution to any students in the University of Northampton, making her the first ever to receive the award.
