If the police release me, I will steal again - Suspect

- Two suspected armed robbers in Niger state, Shehu Bida and Bello Mallam, have claimed that they went into robbery because of the economic recession in the country

- The suspects, before being arrested by the police command in the state, robbed a man, Mohammed Mohammed, of N7,400 and two handsets

- Muhammad Abubakar, the police public relations officer in the state, told newsmen that the suspects will be arraigned upon conclusion of investigation on the incident

Two suspected armed robbers, Shehu Bida and Bello Mallam, who claimed that they went into robbery because there was recession in the country, have been arrested by the Niger state police command. The suspects say they steal because the government has failed to provide jobs for people.

The two suspects were arrested in Talba Estate, Bida town in the Bida local government area of the state. The Punch reported that Buda, 20, and Mallam, 18, were arrested by the police after robbing one Mohammed Mohammed of the sum of N7,400 and two handsets valued at N9,000.

The suspects admitted that they inflicted injuries on Mohammed before forcefully taking his handsets and money from him.

It was gathered that the thieves used a machete and planks to injure Mohammed on the head, for trying to stop them from molesting his daughter.

Buda revealed that he committed the crime because of the economic recession in the nation. He said: “Many people are stealing in the country, including top government officials. People are dying of hunger and there is no job. What else do you expect me to do other than stealing? If am discharged by the police, I will still go back to rob people. The country is in a bad situation.”

Muhammad Abubakar, the police public relations officer, informed newsmen on Tuesday, February 27, that the suspects would be charged to court after investigation on the development has been concluded.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos state police command had arrested three robbery suspects in separate incidents at different parts of the metropolis.

The command in a statement sent to Legit.ng stated that the suspects were arrested between Friday night, October 13, and early Saturday, October 14, 2017.
