I want to be associated with good governance - Imo chieftain dumps APC

- An All Progressives Congress chieftain has formally announced his resignation from the party

- Jerry Chukwueke said the APC has turned Imo state into a monumental disgrace and laughing stock

- Chukwueke also announced his ambition to run for governorship position in the state

An Imo state businessman and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jerry Chukwueke, has announced his formal resignation from the party.

Chukwueke, who is the chairman of the Germaine Group of Companies as well as a founding director of Food Concept, also announced his plan to run for the governorship race in Imo state come 2019.

Speaking to journalists in Awaka, Owerri north area counsel, the party chieftain said he was compelled to resign because the APC has degenerated to what he described as a monumental disgrace in Imo state.

Independent reports that the businessman said the party has made Imo a laughing stock among all the 36 states of the federation.

Chukwueke said: "None of the 27 General Hospitals in the state is functioning and Imo people cannot access health care delivery services any longer. Government’s Urban Renewal Programme is a sham and has rather compounded the woes of the masses and we need social harmony and an enabling environment to promote business in Imo.

"The improvement of security situation in Imo is transient and as long as poverty and unemployment continue unabated, there will be more pressure on security."

He called for a private sector-driven approach to governance and community policing which he said will improve the security situation in Imo.

“I have a strong moral burden to be associated and to defend what good governance is all about," he said.

Further accusing the APC-led administration in the state of deceit, Chukwueke said Imo has remained the only state in the federation without a financial statement of her revenue and expenses till date.

He said such nonchalant attitude of the state government is the major paralyses as the debt profile of the state is in the excess of N107 billion.

“We now have a debt profile that will take many years to restructure and the ease of doing business in Imo is now a major challenge. No serious investors will bring in his investment where they are uncomfortable with the governance," Chukwueke added.

He said the APC administration in the state is a disaster especially in the areas of security, job creation, education, health and provision of infrastructure. He also argued that governance is meaningless if the necessary mechanism is not there to create jobs for the youths.

Legit.ng earlier reported that a popular chieftain of the APC in Bayelsa state, Nathaniel Sylva, visited the governor of the state, Seriake Dickson.

The visit by the chieftain to the PDP stalwart sparked rumours of possible plans of defection by Sylva, who is a kinsman of the former Bayelsa governor, Timipre Sylva.

Sylva, a former chairman of Brass local government area , said he visited the governor to commend him on the efforts of the Dickson-led administration is steering the affairs of Bayelsa.
