Benjamin Mendy has handed Manchester City squad a boost as he returns to training for the first time in six months.

The Frenchman suffered cruciate knee ligament damage after colliding against Andros Townsend in his side’s 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace in September.

Having appeared just four times for the Citizens since his arrival from Monaco in a six year deal worth around £52million last summer, the 23-year-old became doubtful for the remainder of the season, and by extension, the World Cup.

Meanwhile, the left back in an interview according to Sportkeeda claims that he was still recuperating and he is not aiming at a return against city rivals, United in the second leg of their clash on April 7, as he was sighted working with the ball alongside the rest team on Monday, February 5.

City’s aim of winning quadruple this season was shattered after their 1-0 defeat to lower league side, Wigan Athletic, but bounced back almost a week later to beat Arsenal to lift the Carabao Cup.

While they remain on course to finish with a treble this season as they are on top of the Premier League log with 16 points clear of their city rivals, Manchester United.

The runaway leaders are few matches away from being crowned champions of the EPL, while they keep growing stronger in the Champions League.

With his early return to the team, Mendy is probably going to be introduced into his side’s Champions League second leg clash this week, as Pep Guardiola’s men hold a 4-0 advantage over Basel from the first leg.

Winger Raheem Sterling was also back on the training field having missed the past three matches with a muscular problem.

Manchester City will head into the game on the back of their 1-0 victory over current EPL champions, Chelsea.
