Forum urges National Assembly to override presidential veto on Peace Corps bill

- Following the rejection of the Peace Corps bill by President Muhammadu Buhari, a forum in Nasarawa state has called on the National Assembly to override it

- It stated that overriding the president's veto on the bill will address the issue of unemployment in the country

The forum of Youths National Presidents of Ethnic Nationalities in Nasarawa state has called on members of the National Assembly to override President Muhammadu Buhari's veto on Peace Corps bill for the purpose of reducing unemployment in the country, Nigerian Tribune reports.

Legit.ng gathered that the call was made by the coordinator of the forum, Barrister Auna Ashokpa Iliya, on Tuesday, March 6, during his interaction with newsmen in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital.

According to him, the forum had to call on the National Assembly to take the action because of the alarming rate of unemployment in the country.

Ashokpa said: “The forum in its last meeting on March 3, 2018, observed with dismay the rejection of Peace Corps Establishment, 2017 by the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari and remain highly dissatisfied.

“It should be noted that, if the Peace Corps bill is signed into law, it will curb unemployment and reduce the rate of criminality in the country."

He called on Nigerian youths to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities and shun violence in their pursuit for a better welfare.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that President Muhamadu Buhari rejected the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill after considering security advice against the assenting the bill.

The bill approved by the National Assembly was earlier sent to the president in December 2017 through the legislative clerk, Sani Omolori.

However, it was gathered that a 30-day window period which was needed for the president to append his signature on the bill had elapsed.
