Just in: Benue cancels mass burial, prepares for Buhari’s visit

- Governor Samuel Ortom said there won’t be mass burial of 24 people who were killed by herdsmen in Omusu-Edumoga in Okpokwu on Saturday, March 10

- Governor Ortom later shifted the burial of the victims to next week, Thursday, March 15

- He said president Buhari is billed to visit the state next week to commiserate with people of the state over herdsmen attacks

Benue state government on Friday, March 9, cancelled the planned mass burial for victims of herdsmen attack in Okpokwu area of the state because President Muhammadu Buhari is billed to visit next week Monday, March 12 to commiserate with people of the state over herdsmen attacks and massacre of people.

It was learnt that the state governor, Samuel Ortom had announced the mass burial for the victims of herdsmen attack during his visit to Omusu Edimoga in Okpokwu local government area of the state.

Twenty four persons were said to have been killed during the attack which left many people injured and several persons missing.

In a press statement issued by his chief press secretary, Terver Akase the governor said: ''There wouldn’t be mass burial of victims of herdsmen attacks in Okpokwu.”

The statement added that the burial will now take place next week Thursday, March 15.

According to the statement, ''A church service, followed by burial of the victims, will take place on Thursday, next week at Okpokwu.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Governor Samuel Ortom said security agencies did not take proactive measures to protect the state against its aggressors after several complaints of planned attacks reported to them.

Ortom made this known on Wednesday, January 10, in Makurdi at a stakeholders meeting to discuss the security situation in the state.
