It's nothing new - Senate confirms senators receive N13.5m monthly running cost
- The Senate has confirmed revelation by Shehu Sani that Nigerian senators receive N13.5 million monthly
- According to the upper chamber, the revelation by the senator representing Kaduna Central is nothing new
- The spokesperson for the Senate also said the other senators are not happy with Sani's revelation
The National Assembly has confirmed that members of the Senate receive N13.5 million monthly as running cost.
The Senate spokesperson, Aliyu Abdullahi, said the revelation recently made by the senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, that members of the red chamber receive N13.5 million monthly is "nothing new". He said the details revealed to the public by Sani is already contained in budget for the National Assembly.

Abdullahi said the details are, "contained in various line items and expenditure heads of the budget of the National Assembly which has been made public. If people had looked critically at the budget of the National Assembly which has since been made public, they would have seen that various line items like traveling, medicals, consultancy and the rest were captured in the budget and they were the funds divided for each senator’s use.
“Almost all holders of elective and appointive offices have running costs allocated to their offices and that cannot be said to be part of their salaries."

He also added that some of the senators were not happy with Sani's revelation on the issue.
Premium Times reports that some lawmakers had said that they are working out modalities to deal with the senator. It was gathered that these senators who are not happy with the action of their colleague had suggested Sani be sanctioned for such action.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Sani while granting an interview said that he and his colleagues receive N13.5 million as running cost every month. He said aside the running cost, the senators also earn N750,000 as monthly salaries.

Adding that there is no specific instruction on the running cost paid to the senators, Sani said the lawmakers are only expected to provide receipts to back up their expenses on the said amount.
