House of Reps lifts suspension on lawmaker Abdulmumin Jibrin after his apology

Many months after he was suspended for accusing principal officers of the House of Representatives, including Speaker Yakubu Dogara, of padding the 2016 national budget, Abdulmumin Jibrin is now free to associate with his colleagues.

This follows the lifting of the suspension on him by the House after his apology was considered.

Jibrin, who represents a federal constituency in Kano, was said to have apologised to the House.

Premium Times reports that the letter was not fully read before the parliament and that the speaker paraphrased it by saying he had apologised and met all the conditions given to him.

“He has fulfilled all the conditions by writing this letter and so he is free to resume his legislative duties whenever he wants, if he so wishes,” Dogara said.

Jibrin was suspended in 2017 for a period of 180 legislative days for ‘unfolding’ budget padding scandal in the legislature.

His suspension, however, lasted for more than the stipulated 180 legislative days which is equivalent to one year.

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari met with Honourable Abdulmumin Jibrin, while still on suspension at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting followed his protest against his continued suspension from the lower chamber which is now 16 months.

The lawmaker was at the centre of the 2016 budget padding scandal was suspended on September 28, 2016, for 180 legislative days.

In a series of tweets by the embattled chairman, monitored by Legit.ng on Wednesday, December 20, he notified the presidency and asked the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, for a quick dispensation of justice on the matter which is of urgent national importance.
