Karen Cooper left many people stunned and some others in awe and admiration after she reportedly got married to a giant ficus tree that has shaded Snell Family Park in Fort Myers in Florida for more than a century.

According to sources, the tree faced potential danger of being cut down by the new buyer of the land after he revealed his concerns about the liability of the tree. On discovering this, Karen immediately sprung into action to do anything to save the 100-year-old tree.

Speaking with the local media, Karen disclosed that she got the idea after learning of some women in Mexico who married trees to back their protests against deforestation. Karen who lives in the same neighborhood that includes the tree's riverfront park, began mobilizing to save it.

She had this to say: "So I saw that and I thought, 'Oh we should marry the ficus tree — kind of giggle, giggle — but everyone said it's a really good idea, so I said, 'OK, let's do it.' If they cut down this tree, I’m going to be a widow.”

The wedding ceremony which took place at the waterfront on March 24, was carried out with the presence of flowers, music, a tree-decorated wedding cake and a canine ring-bearer named Little Bear.

The city’s Beautification Advisory Board is slated a meeting to decide the fate of the Indian laurel, which recently got a clean bill of a health from a certified arborist.

Early indications shows that the 'newly wed' may get the chance to live happily ever after.

“The City is moving forward to save the Snell Park ficus tree,” a city spokeswoman told the News-Press. “Every day City employees care for the trees and plants that give our city a sense of community and shared history.”
