Shi'ite members storm National Assembly, demand El-Zakzaky's release

- Shi’ite members stormed the National Assembly asking lawmakers to speak against El-Zakzaky’s detention

- They claimed he needed medical attention

- Members of the group vowed to mobilise more members for protest if he is not released

No fewer than 10,000 members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) also known as Shi’a Muslims stormed the National Assembly demanding that their leader, Sheikh El-Zakzaky be released.

Vanguard reports that the members stormed the National Assembly on Wednesday, March 28, asking lawmakers to speak against the continued detention of their leader. They also claimed his health was deteriorating and that he would need medical treatment.

Abdullahi Ahmed Musa who is the secretary, Academic Forum of IMN, said the members were prepared to die for El-Zakzaky’s release. He said if their leader is not release, they would mobilise over 10 million of its members from all over the country to occupy the Federal Capital Territory.

He said: “The status quo of the present day Nigerian is underscored by the fact that the country is trapped in vicious circle of misgovernance.

“Sheikh El-Zakzaky was attacked in his house, at age 65, the humble cleric together with his wife were shot severally at close-range, and brutally tortured by the Army before handing them over to the Department of State Services (DSS).

“We are deeply concerned about the health of our incarcerated leader and we believe that it is necessary that the National Assembly compel those holding him to release him unconditionally to enable him seek for proper medication.

“We will not stop protesting and challenging this tyrannical government and the tyrants ruling it until Sheikh El-Zakzaky is free from this tyrannical detention. They have murdered over 1,000 of our members, and we are ready to mobiles over 10 million of our members to occupy Abuja, if nothing is done to ensure the his speedy release. We are all ready to die for the sake of our leader. We are not free without the freedom of Sheikh Zakzaky, his wife Zeenah and all Nigerians that are detained on the basis of oppression."

It will be recalled that pandemonium struck Abuja on Wednesday morning, January 10, as police fired shots and they forcefully dispersed protesting members of the IMN.

Premium Times reports that hundreds of IMN members started their protest from Garki area 10 heading towards area 1 shortly before they were barricaded by armed security operatives at Moshood Abiola Road on Area 2 junction of the Nigerian capital.

The protesting Shiites were demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who has been held without trial by the government for almost two years.
