Buhari writes condolence letter to NASS over dead lawmakers

- Following the death of its members, President Buhari has written a condolence letter to the Nigerian Senate

- The letter was read on the floor of the upper chamber by Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Tuesday

- Two Nigerian serving senators and a member of the House of Representatives died recently

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, April 10, wrote a condolence letter to the Nigerian Senate on the death of Senators Ali Wakili and Senator Mustapha Bukar.

In the letter, the president eulogized the contributions of the late senators to the parliament and the country.

Senate president, Bukola Saraki, read the letter of condolence from the president on the floor of the upper chamber.

“I was saddened to receive the news of the death of Senators Ali Wakili and Senator Mustapha Bukar. Please convey my heartfelt condolences to their colleagues in the National Assembly on this grievous loss. May the Almighty Allah (SWT) have mercy on them,” part of the letter read.

Meanwhile, in line with its tradition, the National Assembly today observed a minute silence and adjourned plenary in honour of their colleagues.

In closing, Dr Saraki thanked the senators that were a part of the delegation to visit the late families of their dead colleagues and those who attended their funerals.

Plenary was subsequently adjourned to Wednesday, April 11.

A week after the National Assembly mourned the death of Umar Buba Jibril, a House of Reps member from Kogi state, the Senate was thrown into mourning following the death of Senator Mustapha Bukar from Katsina.

Senator Bukar died in the morning of Wednesday, April 4, after a brief illness. Until his death, he was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
