Buhari writes Senate, makes 26 new appointments

- Senate has confirmed Festus Okoye as National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission

- President Buhari’s request on Okoye was contained in a letter read by the Senate President Bukola Saraki

- He is among 26 new appointees confirmed by Senate

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, April 10, wrote the Senate to confirm Festus Okoye as National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Premium Times reports that Okoye is among 26 new appointees the president wrote, in separate letters, to the Senate for confirmation.

President Buhari’s request on Okoye was contained in a letter read by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, shortly before the Senate adjourned plenary on Tuesday, April 10.

The letter read: ''In accordance with the provision of section 154(1) of the 1999 constitution as amended, I rise to forward to the distinguished senators the name of Barrister Festus Okoye for confirmation as National Commissioner representing South-east geo-political zone.

''While hoping that this request will receive the usual expeditious consideration, please accept the president the assurances of my highest regard.''

Okoye, an indigene of Imo state, is the executive director, human rights monitor, and a Solicitor at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

In other letters dispatched to the Senate, President Buhari also sought the confirmation of 23 members of national population commission and two non-legal practitioners as members of Federal Judicial Service Commission.

The two non-legal practitioners are; Abba Ali (Katsina-North west) and Mohammed Sagir (Niger-North central).

The 23 nominees for the National Population Commission are;

9 Ejike Ezeh (Enugu)

10 Abubakar Mohammed Danburam (Gombe)

11 Uba S.F. Nnabue (Imo)

12 Abdulmalik Mohammed Durunguwa (Kaduna)

13 Sulaiman Ismaila Lawal (Kano)

14 Jimoh Habibat Isah (Kogi)

15 Sa’adu Ayinla Alanamu (Kwara)

16 Nasir Isa kwarra (Nasarawa)

17 Aliyu Datti (Niger)

18 Yeye Seyi Adererinokun Olusanya (Ogun)

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that the presidency released a full list of all the appointments made by President Buhari since he assumed office on May 29, 2015.

Femi Adesina, the special adviser to the president on Media and Publicity released the list on Saturday night.

The presidency released the list in reaction to a newspaper publication in which northerners are alleged to have dominated President Buhari's appointments.
