Bank manager, brother drown at Akwa Ibom beach

- Tragedy struck in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, when a bank manager and his brother drowned at a beach in Iwuokpom community

- The manager, Ubong Ekpe, was said to be the bank manager of Skye Bank Plc, Abak Road branch, Uyo, the state capital

- He reportedly went to the beach for a picnic with his brother, wife and four children

A branch manager of Skye Bank Plc has drowned along with his brother, Francis, at the Ibeno Beach, Iwuokpom community, in the Ibeno local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

The deceased, Ubong Ekpe, who had gone to the beach for a picnic on Sunday, April 8, with his four children and wife, was the manager of the bank at Abak Road, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.

He was said to have entered into the beach to swim and did not surface from the water. It was learnt that his brother attempted to save him by diving into the beach, but also drowned, Punch reports.

Legit.ng notes that the remains of the brothers were said to have been recovered in the early hours of Monday, April 9.

A source said: “They went to catch fun at the beach on Sunday. They were eating when Ubong went inside the beach to swim. But he did not surface. His brother plunged in to rescue him, but got drowned as well.”

According to the the state police public relations officer, Odiko Macdon, the incident happened around 8.30pm.

He said: “The Skye Bank manager, his children and wife went to Ibeno Beach to have fun. Sadly, he got drowned. His brother died while trying to save him. The family initially did not report the incident. Their bodies floated and the family took them to Uyo. There is no suspicion of foul play.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that two university graduates reportedly drowned at the beach.

According to Instagram user @ronke_johnson, two of her friends had gone to Elegushi beach in Lagos, to support one of their friends who was celebrating her birthday, and what was supposed to be a fun day became one their family and friends wouldn't forget in a hurry.

The ladies identified as Funmi and Sola, were reportedly swept away by water when the waves hit. Both were said to be graduates of Covenant university Ota, Ogun state, and in their mid twenties.
