Andres Iniesta may have played his last UEFA Champions League match for Barcelona after their 3-0 defeat to AS Roma on Tuesday, April 10 according to the Mirror.

The Italian Serie A side progressed to the semifinals of the championship on an away goal rule having scored one goal at the Camp Nou in the reverse fixture at the Camp Nou a week ago.

And goals from Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi and Konstantinos Manolas ensured the Giallorossi ended the Catalans dream of winning a treble this term, after ending both legs 4-4 on aggregate.

However, the 33-year-old admitted that losing 3-0 to the Italian side was painful – saying it wasn’t the result they expected from the game.

“This is a painful defeat because we didn’t expect it because of the advantage we had,” he said.

When asked if he will play Champions League football next season, Iniesta said: “It’s a possibility [that this is my last game in the competition], but it’s not the day to send messages, we are all hurt.

“It’s not a question of asking forgiveness [from fans], things go for you or they don’t, but the need to win is always the same. We will give our best for two competitions that remain.”

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde wasn’t satisfied with the performance of his players on the night and he said they were outplayed by their hosts.

He added that they forced them to play their style of play, adding that they weren’t able to defend the advances of their host in the game.

“We couldn’t play our game, they were very aggressive,” said Valverde. “We weren’t capable of getting back into the game any moment because of how well they played.

“They were very strong at getting to the second ball and we aren’t used to defending like that. They were aggressive and took the game where they wanted it.

“The coach is the one who has to take responsibility, as the visible head of the team, and that is what it is.”

However, Roma will be playing in the semifinal of this competition for the first time after advancing through to the last four stage on 4-4 aggregate against Barcelona – progressing through an away goal rule.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid host Juventus at the Santiago Bernabeu with three goals advantage from the first leg, while Bayern Munich will battle Sevilla at the Allianz Arena.
