The coordinator of Ezeukwa Development Centre in the Onicha local government area of Ebonyi state, Chukwuma Igwe, has been arrested by the state police command for allegedly demolishing a building and fence belonging to a 94-year-old man, Pa Omabe Obini.
Igwe, who was being interrogated by the police, was arrested on Monday, April 9, for allegedly supervising the act which was carried out by nine suspected thugs. The incident occurred at Uwani Anike village, Punch reports.
NAIJ.com notes that the state police public relations officer, Loveth Odah, said: “We have arrested one Mr. Chukwuma Igwe in connection with a case of malicious damage; we have commenced investigation into the incident."
According to the victim, Obini, who narrated the incident to newsmen in Abakaliki, suspected thugs in company with Igwe invaded his compound with weapons.
He said the weapons included axe, digger and cutlass, adding that the thugs chased away members of his family before embarking on the demolition of his building and a section of his perimeter fencing.
The victim said there was no basis for the action considering that there was no land dispute between him and any member of the community.
The coordinator admitted his involvement in the demolition, but insisted that what was demolished was only the perimeter fencing of Obini’s house, which was the boundary line in Umu Anike community.
Igwe alleged that the decision to demolish the building was unanimously taken by the Anike General Assembly following Obini’s refusal to honour the invitation extended to him by the Assembly.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the police in Ebonyi state on Thursday, February 22, said they arrested two men with guns and other dangerous weapons at a rally in front of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat.
The arrest was made at a solidarity rally staged by the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Ebonyi state chapter, led by Onyeoma Kelechi. The rally was staged to endorse Governor David Umahi for a second term in office.
It was learnt that the two suspects, who the police spokesperson, Loveth Odah, confirmed their arrest, were already in the crowd when they were spotted by police officers.
