- The APC said the door is open for other members of the APC to declare their presidential interest
- Bolaji Abdullahi, however, said the party now has a direction with Buhari’s announcement
- According to him, it would be prejudicial to say Buhari was the only candidate of the party
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that only President Muhammadu Buhari has signified interest in running for office in 2019.
Daily Trust reports that Malam Bolaji Abdullahi who is the publicity secretary of the party spoke on Wednesday, April 11.
Abdullahi said members of the party were delighted with the president’s announcement as it has given the party a clear direction. He said the party was initially unsure whether Buhari would run for presidency or not but with his declaration, the party now had a proper direction.
The party spokesperson said the declaration has generated reaction from members of the National Executive Committee.
He, however, emphasized that the door was not shut to other member of the party as the constitution allows other members interested to make their intention known. He said the party would finally decide who the flagbearer would be in 2019.
Abdullahi said it would be prejudicial to say Buhari was the only candidate of the party but that it was fundamental for him to be given the opportunity to consolidate on the work he has done.
He said they would not repeat what the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did in 2015 when they printed only one nomination form for Goodluck Jonathan.
However, Abdullahi, said it was in the interest of the country that Buhari be allowed to complete the work he has done.
NAIJ.com had reported that President Buhari spoke about his announcement on Monday, April 9, to seek presidential re-election, saying it was to clear the air as a lot of people had been speculating whether he would run or not.
This was contained in a statement by Femi Adesina, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity on Wednesday, April 11.
The president said he wanted to get the declaration away with so that his administration could focus on more important things like agriculture and security.
