- The PRO of OAU has disclosed that the institution has launched an investigation into the sex-for-marks scandal involving a lecturer and student
- He said the vice chancellor and other principal officers of the university acted, the very day the audio recording was leaked
- The PRO disclosed that even though the lecturer has been queried, the affected student has refused to come forward and make a formal complaint
The Obafemi Awolowo University professor recently accused of allegedly demanding sex to upgrade a female student’s result has been queried by the institution’s management, Punch reports.
The development was disclosed by the school’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, during an interview session on Rave FM Osogbo.
NAIJ.com gathers that Olanrewaju disclosed that the institution had launched investigations into the matter. He said appropriate sanctions would be imposed on anyone found guilty. Also, he said the institution is appealing to the affected student to come forward and make a formal complaint against the professor.
He stated: “We have put machinery in motion to ascertain the veracity of the claims and identify the characters involved. As I am talking to you now, the management has taken a position which we will be working on now.
“On the day that the audio was leaked, the vice chancellor and other principal officers of the university acted, including the legal director of the university. We set up a committee and the vice chancellor gave the committee one week to submit its report. After that, we will know what to do.
“The incident happened last year. We have been calling her (the student’s) line, but she is not responding to her calls again. We learnt that she confided in someone that she did not want the appointment of the man (lecturer) to be terminated because of her case.
“The panel has been set up and query has been given to the man; but we need somebody to come up that she was the one that was sexually harassed and the person is not in sight.”
The PRO stated that the institution is safe for all students, and gave the assurance that it would get to the root of the matter.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the vice chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University reacted to a leaked audio that shows Professor Richard Akindele, a lecturer in the institution demanding sex from a female student to help her pass her examination.
In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, April 11, the vice-chancellor, Eyitope Ogunbodede, said the university had begun the process of identifying the person involved.
Ogunbodede said the act was a breach of regulations of the university’s code of conduct and anti-sexual harassment policy.
