- The race for the 2019 presidential election is in top gear
- Some PDP elders from the north seem to have made their stance known ahead of the elections
- The elders are of the opinion that with a heavyweight like Kabiru Turaki, the PDP can defeat the APC in the 2019 presidential election
Northwest elders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that former minister of special duties and inter-governmental affairs, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, will make a good choice for the party ahead of the 2019 presidential election.
This was made known in Kano during a lunch organised by the Kano state PDP excos in honour of Turaki.
NAIJ.com gathered that the lunch was attended by PDP northeast party chairmen and other party big wigs like a former member of the National Assembly, Honourable Farouq Lawan and Dr. Akilu Sani Indabawa, who is one of the PDP gubernatorial aspirants in Kano.
According to the party leaders, with a heavyweight like Turaki, who is also a former supervising minister of labour, the PDP can defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 presidential election.
The Kano state exco of the party, speaking through its chairman, Senator Mas'ud El-Jibril Doguwa, stated that they are ready to offer their support to Turaki and urged the PDP presidential aspirants to unite themselves in order to avoid internal democracy crisis. He described the former minister as a trusted friend and brother who have always shown qualities of commitment to the Nigerian project.
According to the chairman, Turaki can count on the support of the people of Kano with whom he had spent almost 30 years working as lawyer.
The 44 local government chairmen of the state were also present and declared their support for Kabiru Turaki, who is also simply referred to by his supporters as KTT.
In his response, the former minister who is also a member of the PDP Board of Trustees and a key figure in the fight against Boko Haram in the last administration, said he was yet to officially speak about his presidential ambition, but was overwhelmed by the show of support in Kano and will yield to their call.
His words: “I am speaking here in Kano for the first time about my ambition because of what this state means to me. Kano is so important to me and my career and I am using this opportunity to seek your support and advise for my aspiration.’’
He further stated that Nigeria is not moving right under APC and that Nigerians are disappointed and promised to give his best if given the opportunity to lift Nigeria to a greater height.
“APC is not home to Nigerians because so many parties with different ideologies were merged, and this made it impossible for any change to happen. The coalition has unfortunately brought nothing but hardship to the citizens.
“PDP stands and remains a stable party since 1999, which shows evidence of quality and good leadership. The contributions of the PDP to Nigeria and Nigerians can never be wished away and will ensure our re-election,’’ he added.
The entire crowd at the event pledged their support for Kabiru Turaki. He was generally described as one of the leaders in the party who is not known for political animosity and infighting, but was rather commended for his contributions to the party and Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the national financial secretary of the PDP, Abdullahi MaiBasira has expressed optimism that his party will have a successful outing in the 2019 general elections. He stated this during an interactive session with select journalists in his office in Abuja.
The immediate past national youth leader of the party, used the opportunity to advise whoever emerges the PDP's presidential candidate in 2019 to hit the ground running immediately.
