Enough is enough: Governor Bello sets up panel to investigate herdsmen killing in Kogi

- The government of Kogi state has set up a committee to investigate the incessant killing by herdsmen

- The committee inaugurated by Governor Yahaya Bello, is made up of fourteen men

- Bello said that members of the committee were chosen based on their merit and track records

Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi on Tuesday, April 17, set up a judicial commission of inquiry to look into the suspected herdsmen attacks in the Ogane-Nigwu, Ojuwo-Ajimadi and Agbenema-Ife areas of the state.

The committee, which comprise fourteen men, is to determine the immediate and remote causes of the crisis in the affected communities, identify individuals or group of persons responsible for the mayhem, the Punch reports.

The committee was also to ascertain the extent of damage done to lives and properties in the incidents and make recommendations for the restoration of peace and order as well as finding ways of preventing a repeat of such occurrences.

Inaugurating the committee in Lokoja, the governor remarked that his government was committed to ensuring peace in the state and would leave no stone unturned towards achieving it.

Governor Bello, represented at the inaugural ceremony by Elder Simon Achuba, his deputy, stated that owing to the relevance attached to the assignment, the members of the committee were handpicked by virtue of their on merit and track records. However, he urged them to maintain the confidence and trust they have won from the government.

Justice Josiah Mejabi, the chairman of the committee, commended Bello for finding the members of the committee worthy to serve in that capacity, Mejabi said: “We are going to carry out the assignment with the fear of God.”

Some suspected herdsmen had in March 2018 attacked remote villages of Ogane-Nigwu with not less than 50 villagers killed.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Governor Bello on Friday, February 9, in Abuja said that the state had commenced cattle ranches on 15,000 hectares of land in two local government areas.

Legit.ng gathered that the Kogi state governor disclosed this during his official visit to the minister of agriculture and rural development, Audu Ogbeh, where he delivered a letter to that effect.
