Breaking: Senate adjourns plenary to visit Dino Melaye in hospital

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, April 25, ended its plenary session early to enable lawmakers to visit their colleague, Senator Dino Melaye, Premium Times reports.

Legit.ng gathered that the lawmakers, took turns at the plenary to condemn the police for what they termed as inhuman treatment of Melaye by security operatives.

Oluremi Tinubu while deliberating on the incident moved a motion that the Senate adjourn plenary to immediately go in search of the Kogi state senator.

Tinubu’s suggestion follows several accounts of earlier speakers that they were turned back while attempting to visit Melaye at the hospital.

In a report by The Punch, the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, told the lawmakers that he had sent a delegation to the National Hospital Abuja where Melaye was being treated under the watch of policemen.

Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, the deputy majority leader, briefing the lawmakers on the visit‎, said the police and the hospital had not been feeding Melaye for fear of being implicated. He said the police and hospital’s management however asked that any volunteer could feed him, provided that they would taste from the food.

He said they were also told that an undertaking must be signed for Melaye’s discharge from the hospital for better treatment elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the Senate has summoned the inspector-general of police, Ibrahim Idris, to appear before the plenary on Thursday, April 26. Saraki announced that Idris is to appear by 11am on Thursday and that the IGP will be grilled on the arrest of Melaye and recent insecurity challenges in the country.

The Senate president said summoning the IGP is necessary as he had not been able to reach Idris for some days. He also requested the session be aired live.

The Senate thereafter adjourned plenary after a voice vote to enable all the lawmakers to visit Melaye.

Legit.ng previously reported that the senator representing Kogi state west at the Senate, Dino Melaye, explained the events leading to his reported escape from a moving police vehicle that landed him in a hospital in Abuja on Tuesday, April 24.

Premium Times reports that in a statement signed by Melaye's media aide, Gideon Ayodele, on Wednesday, April 25, said the senator voluntarily submitted himself to the police and, therefore, did not deserve to be forcibly taken to Kogi state to stand trial in a slew of criminal indictments that include murder and armed robbery.

Ayodele said: “Earlier in the morning, Senator Dino Melaye as a law-abiding citizen voluntarily submitted himself to the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) who had laid siege to his private residence since around 3.35pm of Monday, April 23."
