Benue killings: Catholic Church fixes May 22 for mass burial

- The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, Benue state, has announced that the victims of Tuesday’s killings would be buried on May 22

- The 19 victims would be buried at a centre used for prayer retreats by the Catholic faithful, which also doubles as a rest home for priests

- The chancellor of the diocese urged the federal government to live up to its responsibility of protecting lives and properties

A mass burial will be held in Benue state on Tuesday, May 22, for the 19 victims of the Catholic Church killings on Tuesday, April 24, The Nation reports.

Very Rev. Fr. Jude Ortese, the chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, said the victims which included two priests - Rev Fr Joseph Gor and Rev Felix Tyolahan - would be laid to rest at the Susugh Maria Pilgrimage Centre, Ayati, Ikpayongo, Gwer East local government area.

NAIJ.com learnt that the Susugh Maria Pilgrimage Centre is used for prayer retreats by the Catholic faithful, and is also a rest home for priests.

He pointed out that the Diocese was breaking its rule of burials taking place within 10 days of death because “the state government is involved in the burial and all the bishops in Nigeria, including the bishop of Makurdi Diocese, are in Rome to see the pope and some bishops may also attend the burial, so there is need to accommodate all stakeholders."

The cleric urged the federal government to live up to its responsibility of protecting lives and properties.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that impromptu protests erupted in major areas of Makurdi, the Benue state capital as news of the killing of two priests and 17 worshipers by suspected armed herdsmen filtered into the town.

The victims had gone to morning mass at St Ignatius Quasi Parish when their attackers who had laid ambush on the community attacked them around 5.30am and killed them. The herdsmen extended their terror to other villagers burnt their houses numbering about 100.

Angered by the news, youths took to the streets, blocked roads and made bonfires which caused tension.
