US calls for transparency in 2019 general elections, promises to help Nigeria

- It also promised to provide balanced and objective reportage during the elections

The United States government has called for transparency in the coming 2019 general elections. This was disclosed in Lagos during the 2018 world press freedom day organised by the US mission Nigeria on Thursday, May 3.

While speaking, United States council general, F.John Bray, during his opening remarks called on Nigerian journalist to be fair and diligent in their reports.

The US while saying it has worked with Nigeria in strengthening press institutions promised to provide balanced and objective reportage of the general elections.

Going further, the US said the press is critical in the development of the country and hence, its transparency is needed during the 2019 election year.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that President Muhammadu Buhari said his administration would soon launch a special anti-corruption tribunal.

The president said the tribunal will have the powers to seize cash and assets of Nigerians convicted of failing to explain how they came about their humongous wealth.

While speaking with Voice of America ,the president said: “They will be asked to prove how they acquired the difference, otherwise, everything will be taken away and they will be prosecuted.”
