The Benue state government has obtained the permission of the High Court to institute a criminal case against the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal for allegedly being behind the attacks that resulted in the deaths of several persons in the state between December 31, 2017 and January 1, 2018.
Leadership reports that counsel to the Benue state government, Andrew Wombo, said the state is charging the Miyetti Allah Kautal to court on eight count charges ranging from grievous hurts, arson, conspiracy, to mischief by fire, among others.
“We are here in the court to institute a criminal case against leadership of Miyetti Allah and some Fulani herdsmen who instigated attacks on innocent civilians between the 31 day of December 2017 and 1st of January 2018, in Guma and Logo local government areas of Benue State, which the court has granted our application to charge them to court and we are going to charge them immediately,” he said.
He said the government will serve the group a copy of the charge so that they can come to court to defend themselves.
The Sun reported that the villages attacked by the suspected herders included Bolki, Bang, Zumoso and Gon in Numan and Lamurde local government areas of the state.
The newspaper citing local sources, stated that herdsmen militia allegedly arrived the communities, on Wednesday night, May 2, on motocycles and hilux trucks, killing and burning down villages.
A source said the two hilux trucks of military personnel retreated on sighting the suspected herdsmen, while two Air Force fighter jets flew over the town before the attack but refused to engage the attackers.
