Alex Ferguson undergoes successful emergency brain surgery

Former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has had emergency surgery on Saturday May, 5, for a brain haemorrhage.

A statement by United said the procedure "had gone very well" but Ferguson "needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery".

The 76-year-old retired as the Red Devils manager in May 2013 after winning 38 trophies during 26 years reign at Old Trafford.

The Scotsman was at the Theatre of Dreams last Sunday when he presented Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger with a commemorative trophy.

The Fergusons' have requested privacy as he recovers in Salford Royal Hospital.

Fergie's trophy haul at United included 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

Ferguson famously won the Treble including the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 1999.

The likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Nickky But.t and others were all part Fergie's golden generation as they went on to become regular in the England national team.

Since his retirement from the Manchester club, United have employed David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho as the team is yet to win the Premier League in the new era.

United are currently second on the table under Mourinho's tutelage as they are aiming for their best finish in a Premier League season in five years.
