JUST IN: Customs detains importer over containers load of Tramadol smuggled from India

- After intercepting 40 and 20 feet containers loaded with Tramadol tablets, the Nigeria Customs Service has detained one suspect

- It was reported that the containers were intercepted after attempts to smuggle them out of the seaport

One suspect has been detained by the Tincan Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in connection with the importation of 40 and 20 feet containers loaded with Tramadol tablets allegedly smuggled from India.

According to the controller of the command, Musa Abdullah, the seizure came against the backdrop of the ban on codeine syrup by the federal government, Premium Times reports.

NAIJ.com notes that the containers were intercepted by officers of the command after there were attempts to smuggle them out of the seaport.

Abdullah: “Despite efforts to discourage importation of illicit drugs, some unrepentant fellows still engage in such misdemeanour.

“One by 40 and 2 by 20 containers of Tramadol Hydrochloride 225mg which were declared electrical static converters and ciprofloxacin. We are collaborating with NAFDAC and NDLEA on this seizure.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigeria Customs Service intercepted a large quantity of tramadol tablet allegedly smuggled from India.

The shipment in containers was said to be intercepted by customs officers after a failed attempt to smuggle them out of the seaport.

A customs officer who did not want to be identified said the seizure was as a result of efforts being put in place by the customs service to prevent smuggling and evasion of duty in the seaports.
