Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer set to miss World Cup

- Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer might miss out of this year's World Cup

- He has not featured in any game since he got injured in September last year

- The 32-year-old is working hard to ensure he is ready to man the post for his country in Russia

Bayern Munich superstar Manuel Neuer is doubtful for Germany as the European country begin their title defence in Russia next month.

The 32-year-old has not featured for both his club and country since September 2017 after suffering a Metatarsal fracture while on duty for the Bavarians.

He has however returned to first team training with the Allianz Arena outfit but his manager, Jupp Heynckes doesn’t feel the goalkeeper is strong enough to resume action this weekend.

Bayern will battle Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Cup final on May 19, and the manager is likely to hand him (Neuer) some playing time in the game.

Meanwhile, the 2014 World Cup winning goalkeeper claims he is unsure of his readiness for this year’s championship in June.

"I cannot say at the moment whether I will make the World Cup. I don't think it is conceivable that I can go into the World Cup without any match practice.

"It's going well and I'm feeling good, but I have to make the right decision for me, the team and Germany.

"I want to get better each day and try to get fit as quickly as possible. We'll see if it's enough, but I can't say for certain."

Nations must submit their final 23-man squads for the World Cup by June 4 and if Neuer is not fit then Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen is likely to take his place.

Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff still thinks Neuer will be involved in Russia.

"I'm still confident and convinced that Manuel will be at the World Cup," he said.

"In Manuel's case we're taking it day by day. For him - as is the case with other injured players - it's important that they find their rhythm and concentrate in peace so that they return to fitness.

"The real deadline is June 4, when we have to nominate the final 23-man squad."

Neuer broke into the German national team in 2009 and he was instrumental to their World Cup triumph in Brazil in 2014.

He also has in his trophy cabinet one Champions League and six Bundesliga titles since he joined them almost a decade ago.

Before joining the Bavarians nine years ago, he featured for Shalke 04 for five seasons and won the DFB Pokal in 2011.

The shotstopper has represented his national team at their various underage competitions before being promoted to the senior national team.
