The German government has reportedly proposed a new system of repatriation called ‘Return and Re-admission’ aimed at facilitating the smooth return of about at least 30,000 Nigerian migrants who illegally entered the country.
Daily Trust quotes Geoffrey Onyeama, the foreign affairs minister, as disclosing this on Tuesday, May 15, when he received the security adviser to the president of Germany, Jan Hecker, and his team in Abuja.
According to him, the German government proposed the new plan after the perceived failure of the current system to ensure smooth repatriation.
The report said the current process involves both the participation of Nigerian embassy and consulate as well as the German immigration office.
“They don’t have enough faith and confidence in the process that we have at the moment for the repatriation process.
“Some of the delays they believed were with the mission and consulate in Germany,” the minister said adding that in the last two years, only 200 Nigerians have returned to the country out of the about 30,000.
It was learnt that Jan Hecker said he was in Nigeria to for the purpose of bilateral relations especially as it concerns issues of migration.
NAIJ.com earlier reported that the National Emergency Agency (NEMA) said that 1,295 Nigerians returned home from Libya in November, a figure which was twice as that of October.
It was gathered that the director-general of the agency, Mustapha Maihaja, said Nigerians were sent back in batches between November 6 and November 30 with the help of the International Organization for Migration and the European Union.
