Police arraign 3 men in court for smoking ‘Igbo’ in public

- The Lagos state police command has arraigned three men in court for smoking ‘Igbo’ in public

- The accused were reported to the police by residents of the area, who said the air was being polluted

- The presiding magistrate granted each of the accused N100,000 bail and adjourned the case till May 26

Three men were on Wednesday, May 16, charged before an Ikorodu magistrates’ court in Lagos state for allegedly smoking (Cannabis) hemp, also known as ‘Igbo’, in public.

The accused - Ayodele Peter, 30; Muiz Bada, 25; and Abisoye Idowu, 32 — whose addresses were not made available, are facing a charge of breach of public peace, NAN reports.

NAIJ.com gathers that the police prosecutor, Sgt Bosede Adegeshin, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 29 at Grammar School, Ikorodu. She alleged that the accused have been smoking hemp openly in the area, thereby causing a breach of public peace to the residence as the smoke polluted the air.

“The residents reported the incident to the police and they were apprehended,” she said.

The offence contravened Section 168 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The three men pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate, E. O. Ogunkanmi, in his ruling, granted each of the accused N100,000 bail with three sureties each in like sum.

Ogunkanmi said the sureties must be their blood relations and adjourned the case until May 26 for further hearing.

In a related development, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigerian Police Force said it arrested a woman, Doris Ossai, with 187 bags of substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

The police said Ossai was arrested in Masaka, Karu local government area of Nasarawa state.

Speaking to journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the spokesperson for the police, Jimoh Moshood, said Ossai's arrest followed a coordinated operation by a Special Tactical Squad of the inspector general of police.
