- Atletico Madrid are the champions of the 2017-18 Europa League
- They defeated French League side, Marseille 3-0 to win their third UEFA second tier competition
- After the victory, Diego Simeone's family rushed to the pitch to celebrate him
It was a happy ending for Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone after his side thrashed Olympique Marseille 3-0 to win the Europa League title in France on Wednesday, May 16.
Two goals from Antoine Griezmann and one from Gabi ensured the Spanish outfit claim their 3rd Europa League title.
However, at the blast of the final whistle, Simeone’s partner, Carla Pereyra and three of his four children were the first to congratulate the Argentine on winning his sixth trophy in seven years in charge.
The tactician rushed to bearhug his kids and his model girlfriend on the pitch as the entire team were jubilating their success in Europe this term.
Apart from Simeone’s eldest son, Giovanni Simeone, who plays for Italian side Fiorentina, all others came to cheer the Atletico boss to victory on the night.
It was recalled that Argentine manager was handed touchline ban for his outrage during his side’s 1-1 against Arsenal in the first leg of their semifinal clash at the Emirates Stadium late last month, reasons he was not on the bench with his team.
His absence was however nothing for the Spanish side to worry about as strolled passed their French opposition in the meeting.
Meanwhile, this will Simeone’s second Europa League trophy since he became the manager of the side, with a La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish and Uefa Super Cups in his cabinet.
Simeone already has three sons according to the Sun; Giovanni, 22, Gianluca, 21, and Giuliano, 14 – with ex-wife Carolina Baldini, who he divorced in 2008.
However, himself and Carla are parents to baby daughter Francesca.
Both of them have been seeing themselves since 2014, and Carla posted a number of videos to social media of her looking after the children in the stands during the match.
Emotions were running high and it was also a special night for Atletico favourite Fernando Torres, who lifted his first and final major trophy with his boyhood club.
Torres, 34, came on in the final minutes and will now bid the team goodbye against Eibar on Sunday.
While reacting to Fernando Torres lifting the cup with the team, Simeone said: “I’ve never given him anything.
“For Fernando, it’s a dream come true [winning the Europa League], I hope the crowd explodes on Sunday, he’s a fantastic kid, everything he’s achieved has been earned by him.”
The former Liverpool and Chelsea forward returned to Spain in 2015, following an unsuccessful spell in Italy.
