The recently rescheduled local government congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River went bloody when a woman returning from farm and 10 others were reportedly shot in Ugep, headquarters of Yakurr region of the state on Wednesday, May 17.
It all began when alleged rival factions loyal to Usani Usani, the minister of Niger Delta Affairs and Clement Ebri, the former governor of the state respectively, both from the area, engaged each other in a gory gun battle, Vanguard reports.
Reporting the incident to newsmen, a source who wished to remain unnamed said: “The two sides were arguing over the delegates list. This degenerated into a confrontation and subsequently a gun battle. Many people were shot and a woman who was returning from farm was hit by a stray bullet.”
The source further said that the congress was stalled as people including some security officials took to their heels while those shot were hurried to the Ugep General Hospital.
Meanwhile, in Abi area of the state, one Egbona was alleged to have escaped with the election materials leading to the opposing faction conducting a parallel congress and subsequently two executives emerged in the area, one led by Ekpe Elele and the other by Oche Ernest.
Chief Ernest Irek, a stalwart of APC in Obubra said: “There was a misapplication of the delegates list because some people wanted to play games by injecting some names and this led to disagreement.
What we have agreed upon now is that like it was done in local governments in the northern part of the state, we are going to rely on the list with the police and INEC for those elected during the ward congresses last week.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the special congress of the APC in Cross River state to elect a chairman had continued to generate controversy as one of the candidates Matthew Achigbe had described the exercise as a sham.
NAIJ.com that Achigbe, who made this known in Calabar on Monday, February 26, rejected the outcome of the congress which saw Godwin Etim John emerge winner with 56 votes.
